The unusual bond between humans and Tlic is very strange. It seems like the Tlic are using the Terrans for their own purposes in exchange for not. They're not allowed to have any weapons and depend on the Tlic for protection as long as they need them. The protagonist, a young boy named Gan, seems to take the role as a reproductive slave in this alien society. Women are usually the ones being sexually exploited, but its not the case for this one.
Humans seem to be bred for hosting purposes, they live in a specific place and have a Tlic assigned to each family. The Tlic have also eased the humans into actually believing this is their purpose, they don't hide what happens when the humans "give birth".
In the end we have a human who questions the system, but ends up giving up to the system. Or does he? Gan says he wanted to keep T Gatoi for himself.
1- What is your reaction to the text you just read?
Mainly disgust, the Tlic C section was really hard to read. Especially this early in the day. After that I just felt disappointed that Gan didn't step up against the Tlic. It made me angry that humans were being exploited by insect like beings laying eggs in them. Things like these happen in real life with sexual slavery/exploitation around the world, and that makes it even worse to think about. We don't have to think about an alternate reality where aliens implant eggs on humans to realize how bad this is.
2-What connections did you make with the story that you just read? Discuss the elements of the work which with you were able to connect
I haven't been abducted by aliens and used as a host for their eggs, or sexually exploited. There are however some parallels between this and slavery. Even if the Tlics and humans have sort of transaction happening between the laying of the eggs and protection, humans are still being used for the Tlic's benefit. They could use any other animal but they choose humans because they produce larger, healthier Tlics. Tlics are using humans for the advancement of their own species.
3- What changes would you make to adapt this story into another medium? What medium would you use? What changes would you make?
This story could work as a comic or live action film. I would probably include a lot more exposition about the world these characters live in. Making the audience know exactly how Tlic-human power dynamics work. The relationship between T'Gatoi and Gan could be explored more. Like a Shape of Water situation. It seems like in the end they're in love, or at least attracted to each other. Making that clearer would translate Better into a film. The Tlics could be a xenomorph like design. The Tlic birth might be a too gross to show on film.... Some people would find it cool....Not me..For the sake of the general public's stomach maybe it could be toned down a notch with the flesh eating larvae.
